Spoiling the Earth

The earth is the garden planet of the Universe. Scientists estimate that the earth came into being 4.6 billion years ago. Six billion people share the resources of one world.
Richer countries use more resources and cause more pollution than poor countries.
Here are some examples: 4.5% of the population lives in the USA, where 22% of greenhouse gases are produced, while 17% of the population lives in India, where 4.2% of greenhouse gases are produced. 45% of carbon dioxide is produced by the G8 countries against 0.4% of carbon dioxide produced by the world's poorest countries. 96% of deaths from natural disasters happen in developing countries (Christian Aid source). We humans are interfering with creation through chemicals used in agriculture, genetically modified crops, industrial pollution, air pollution, soil erosion, water pollution, acid rains and the destruction of tropical forests, global warming and its impact on the ozone layer. The impoverishment, which flows from this destruction, goes far beyond our physical needs. We diminish our own humanity when we destroy our environment. Our sense of wonder, beauty and joy come from the profusion of colour, pattern and music in the world around us.
