In the African Continent

The people of Liberia elected two ladies as President:

  • Ruth Perry (1996-97)
  • and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (2005);


Mrs. Perry assumed the difficult task of securing the peace after a civil war that isolated Liberia during seven years.
Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf known as the "Iron lady", has claimed victory in Liberia's first presidential run-off after 14 years of war. As the first African woman to be elected president she has vowed to improve the education system of the country.


There were five more women appointed as Prime Ministers:

  • Two in Saint Tome' and Prince Maria das Neves (2002-04) and Maria do Carmo (from 2005),
  • Madior Boye in Senegal (2001-02)
  • Agathe Uwilingiyimana in Rwanda (1993-94)
  • and Luisa Diogo in Mozambique (from 2004).


Mrs. Das Neves was dismissed after a corruption scandal in the sector of the petroleum that affected two ministers.
Mrs. Do Carmo an expert in economy is trying to take her country out of a deep crisis.
Mrs Boye is a magistrate she was also minister of Justice and is not affiliated to any political party.
Mrs. Uwilingiyimana lead a hard concentration government that lasted one year. At the outset of the genocide she was one of the victims.
Mrs. Diogo an expert in economy has achieved that the international community trusts her administration as one free of corruption.
